The best ice cream in the world is at Berthillon July 6, 2007
Posted by Niels in : Links, Personal , 4 commentsI appreciate fine ice cream more than I appreciate fine wine. I look for artisanal ice creams and flavors everywhere I travel. I easily ate over $100 worth of gelato during my week in Italy. So trust me, the ice cream at Maison Berthillon in Paris is good.
So good that the first day I went I got two scoops, walked down the street, turned back and bought another two. So good, that the next day I walked through the pouring rain to get another three. And so good that I’ll be thinking about the Chocolate Gianduja Orange for a long, long time. The rest of the diverse selection of flavors (by diverse, I mean they don’t just have Caramel. They have Caramel, Salted Caramel, and Ginger Caramel) are fantastic, but the Gianduja Orange is the best ice cream I’ve ever had.
The ice cream was so good that I came back home and went on the internet to see what else I’ve been missing. And discovered Bi-Rite Creamery in San Francisco. To think, I almost left the bay area without tasting their ginger ice cream! That would have been a tragedy.
Your thoughts?Bui restaurant in Berkeley June 21, 2007
Posted by Niels in : Links, Personal , 1 comment so farAte dinner at Bui (formerly Saigon City) restaurant in Berkeley tonight. The food is delicious, particularly the banana flower salad, but the best part of the meal was chatting with the chef and owner, Patrick Bui, afterwards. He was a mechanical engineer for Bechtel and at age 34 left to follow his lifelong dream of being a chef. He said the first few years were the hardest, going from a six-figure salary to making about $8 an hour. But, he says, those years are like a test. If you make it through, you can be successful doing something you’re passionate about. Those are the stories I love hearing because they reassure me that I’m going to be ok.
Your thoughts?Go on a virtual date - real girls are obsolete June 16, 2007
Posted by Niels in : Links , 3 commentsLook at me, wasting my time with real girls when all along I could have been seeing boobies electronically. Mmm… pixels…
For those of you not stuck in the trap of talking to real people, you now have the opportunity to simulate it online for free. All the joys of a bad date, but all you’ll catch is carpal tunnel!

Your thoughts? In the Blink of an eye - trust your intuition May 24, 2007

A commenter on my recent post Address the Emotions, not the Logic said this:
You can’t just watch a couple interact for a couple of minutes and then make these big judgements about them. You have no idea what they’re usually like, or how significant these different events are to them.
But John Gottman, a world renowned social psychologist, would beg to differ.
There is the story of the psychologist John Gottman, who since the 1980’s has worked with more than 3,000 married couples in a small room, his ”love lab,” near the University of Washington. He videotapes them having a conversation. Reviewing just an hour’s worth of each tape, Gottman has been able to predict with 95 percent accuracy whether that couple will be married 15 years later. If he watches only 15 minutes of tape, his success rate is about 90 percent. Scientists in his lab have determined they can usually predict whether a marriage will work after watching just three minutes of newlywed conversation.
(From the New York Times review of Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink, which describes John Gottman’s work and other examples of the incredible accuracy of our intuition.)
The Kama Sutra for internet geeks May 13, 2007
Posted by Niels in : Links , 3 commentsIt’s funny, but it hits a little close to home…
THE HAWK A woman that the man has never met before positions herself in the seat next to his in a movie theater. His eyes caress her knees and thighs continuously for several hours. In an advanced form of this technique, she crosses her legs and her ankle brushes against his calf.
