Preparing for another career move June 6, 2008

Posted by Niels in : Personal , trackback

Seems like it was just yesterday that I was excited about my new job at Biznik. I’m still excited about Biznik - I think it provides extremely valuable networking opportunities to small businesses - but two months in, it’s become clear that I don’t fit into the Biznik business. I was hired to do sales and business development, but I’ve come to understand that my ideas about how to monetize the site are too different for me to help the founders along the path they want to follow. I’ve told the founders as much, the split seems amicable, and so I plan to continue working to make July’s BizJam conference a success as I simultaneously start planning my next career move.

I’m thinking about marketing for my next step. I’ve got a tech background, sales experience, marketing experience, I’ve done a bunch of copywriting, and I think behavioral economics is awesome. Marketing’s the obvious choice. Consulting is another possibility. The end goal is still my own business eventually, but I need to take a break from being poor for a while, just for my own mental health.

On an entirely unrelated note - interesting development on my prosopagnosia. Apparently I compensate for my faceblindness by recognizing things other than faces and am better than average at recognizing people from behind.

This is quite interesting. Marketing is the best place to work but you should be innovative.

Hey Niels… just wanted to say that it’s been really interesting watching you grow since I first saw you on BATG. You’re actually the one that inspired me to take action to improve my own social life.

Rock on!

In other words, you’re an ass man.
