Geeks, nerds, and dorks October 14, 2006

Posted by Niels in : Life, the universe, and everything , trackback

I was always ok with being a dork.  I always pictured a dork as having a sense of humor, and I was ok with having that as my only redeeming quality.  Getting called a nerd was much harsher.  In my view, nerds were one-dimensional characters, unable to find beauty in anything but academics, Revenge of the Nerds notwithstanding.  The geek subspecies was never really present at my high school.  Perhaps it is native to the west coast.

However, others have recently informed that I am wrong, that in fact geek>nerd>dork.  Dorks are just useless, but at least a nerd has some type of skill (though probably not marketable).  See “computer nerd”.  Once you have enough of that skill to become marketable, you become a geek.

Now I just have to find out what a dweeb is.

In my view geeks and nerds are same, nerds just taken in a negative sense …. dork is a social outcast and may not be in category of geeks and nerds ..thats my distinction

I completely agree with your opinion as listed here.

Whoa whoa whoa.

I have done a lot of soul searching to figure this one out.

Geeks are people that are so wrapped up in their intellectual or academic area that they completely lose sight of the fact that there is a world around them with things like fun and other people in it.

Nerds are people that get there jollies from academic and intellectual achievement, but haven’t necessarily lost sight of the world around them.

Dorks are people that can be somewhat normal, but just like some stupid stuff like comic books, japanese animation, and star wars.

You got it backwards man, dork>nerd>geek.

A dweeb is like a geek, but not smart.

Whoa. Looks like I opened up a can of worms on this one. Who would have guessed all these doofuses would be so sensitive?
